To follow up from my last post about my ‘high cholesterol,’ I’m glad to know (sister reminded me) that it is ‘family trait’ on my mother’s side – even though I am mindful about what I eat. AND, Dr. B (our lovely boss) confirmed that those tests aren’t always accurate (when done incorrectly) so he gave me information on getting a proper cholesterol test. Yes, it got me upset, mainly because I already have all these other issues (menopause & IBS) that don’t help with this nasty weight gain and lack of energy!
So what did I do after work on Friday?
I went and enjoyed my free pilates workout with Nicole of Joyful Fitness Pilates (whom I recommend and will try and see again).
Then I went for a GREAT meditative long, 6.12 mile walk from Juanita Park to downtown Kirkland and back. Walking through the trailside of the park, meandering back through some pretty neighborhood homes, listening to birds chirping, and moments along the waters edges listening to the waves lap against the coast. As I got to downtown Kirkland, there was a group of school kids who held up signs to passing cars, “Honk if Your Happy,” “Smile, It’s Sunny” and lots of waving!
I bought a Gelato cone and walked to the boat park and saw couples on the benches and lots of ‘rusty’ people (as I call us pale Seattleites who don’t tan, we rust – lol) with their heads held up toward the heat and children squealing with delight as they quickly jumped in and out of the cold water, but happy to be OUTSIDE!
That long walk left my poor feet pretty sore this Saturday morning (sign that I need to get some new sneakers again). So after all my chores, maybe mowing the lawn, much needed cleaning of my junk room and then cleaning the bathrooms, I will treat myself to a nice bath with my Formulary 55 bath tablets!
This post made me laugh and sounds like a good reason to take a bath anyways… (enjoy).
Can you bath away calories – or is this a Southern Tall Tale?
Not sure if this is just another “southern tall tale” or not, (lol) but I’m willing to try… besides I’m a bath fanatic when it comes to wanting to destress. Found this on Southern Living Magazine.
Love Baths? We’ve Got Great News
We all could use a few hours of relaxing with a nice book and a glass of wine in the tub, but did you know that there are real health benefits to your favorite pastime? Turns out that drawing a hot bath could actually help you lose weight.
A study at Loughborough University tested out the theory that taking warm baths could help lower your calorie count by putting 14 men through two different experiments. In one group, the men did a one-hour bicycle ride. In the second group, the men took a one-hour bath. The goal of the study was to raise the body’s core temperature by one degree. The cycling burned many more calories than those who had a hot bath, but researchers did come up with surprising result – relaxing in the bath burned around 130 calories, or a similar amount to what you’d burn in a 30-minute walk.
As it turns out, passive heating – like relaxing in a warm bath – can help reduce inflammation in the body. A 2015 study in the JAMA Internal Medicine journal also reported that passive heating in saunas can have a similar effect.
Although not enough to replace your daily exercise, we certainly wouldn’t be opposed to taking a few more relaxing soaks to counteract the work week.
Do you like to take baths or are you a shower fan?
