For those Single Mother’s…
As a Single Mother, My Mom Taught Me How to Be Strong
Because of her, I’ve always told my kids to never give up, and that it’s okay to ask for help.
It’s because of you that I’m a strong woman. When I was six years old, you came to the United States from Haiti for a year and a half. You saved your money and got all our paperwork in order so you could return to the U.S. with me and my six older siblings and make a life here. You — as a single mom doing it all on your own — had this amazing ability to make our lives feel full, even though we didn’t have a lot. Your strength made us feel loved and safe.
Being a Haitian woman, you taught me to hold my head up high and live a life of integrity. Now that I’m a single mom, I realize what you went through in order to make our lives better.
Because of you, I always tell Oliver, Jax and Jaid to never give up, and that it’s okay to ask for help. Because of you, I’m not afraid to ask people for help if I have to go to work, or if I need help with my kids. You inspired me to create a village of women who support each other. When we do that, we’re the strongest.
I feel like you’re with us, your spirit. The other day, I was driving with Oliver, and he said, “Mom, I miss her.” I told him, “You know she loved you,” and he said yes. When I miss you most, I think about how you used to play music on Sundays. All kinds — classical, jazz, Haitian. I do that now too. On the weekends I’ll play music while I’m cleaning the house or hanging out with the kids, and it makes me feel closer to you.
Thank you, I love you, and because of who you are and how you were, it’s made me the woman I am today. I hope you’re proud.
