Part Two: Road Trip continues… we departed Mendocino (on California State Route 1) and headed to Saratoga, to go visit Michael’s dad (family), but that route took us back to some main roads (I-5), which was fine since we were going over 80mph… lol. Following dinner we had to find our next hotel – which we quickly only found a Best Western in Marina – cost WAY more than we wanted, but again, when you don’t plan you have to take what you can get. And it was late…
The next morning, Sunday, May 24th we drove back out to Route 1 and to the beauty of the Pacific Ocean – passing through some of Big Sur…
Loved seeing the flag flying (for Memorial Day) from a random ranch entrance.
We then hit a little bit of fog and some sprinkles, but it didn’t last. Did enjoy the beauty over the mountains though.
We then make our way to Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park… note, this is a very popular stop and tourist attraction. Expect difficulty in parking (on the sides of the 2 lane road).
so we take back off and end up at Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery – in San Simeon, CA – and WOW!
After a quick lunch (following our Elephant Seal photos) we made a stop along the way to Hearst Castle Winery (which I spotted quickly) – a little something for Michael to enjoy. lol
You can FAINTLY see the castle in the distance. But we drove over to see what all the ‘fuss’ was about – let’s just say you have to go to the Hearst Castle visitor center and spend about the same amount of money as you would if you were going to Disneyland… without the fun rides and the characters… lol. AKA – we bought the wine and I got a cute yellow tee shirt. I’ll stick with that for the memories.
We continue down to Morro Bay and then over to San Luis Obispo and then up to Route 229 (off the 41) – and OMG, I am in MY love of this road! It’s like what Michael got to experience with the first day into Mendocino – it’s got these great quick turns, hills, ups/downs and quick bends. We pass a group of motorcycle groups with these huge shit-grins on their faces and I find out why… (sorry no photos, but highly recommend it – this video shares the motorcycles SHIT-GRINS perfectly)!! Highly recommend!!
After my squeals of delight we make it on toward Creston and get to California Route 41 toward Shandon. I instagram’ed this photo – we’ve left the beautiful coastline to dried mountain terrain – but this is another fun drive (when your in a convertible and able to enjoy each dip and turn)…
Michael loved seeing the vineyards… I loved seeing the new variety. And did I mention Route 229? HA HA
We then drove all the way UP the 41 past Fresno and in to Yosemite. We stopped and stayed at the Best Western Plus Yosemite Gateway Inn. Surprised for an old hotel, the room was huge and comfortable!
For now I will follow up with the rest of our trip and photos.
