I’ve been MIA from my postings due to work events. Our company got a Suite at Safeco Field this year for the Seattle Mariners Games and as the Corporate Event Planner, I’ve had the ‘pleasure’ of being there for the first three games!
Monday (day game) we enjoyed going to the Opening Game – Mariners vs. Angels (all three).
Now, I have to admit, I’m not really a baseball fan (it gets a bit slow for me), but Opening Day was, of course, exciting (when you get a sell out event). And it was enjoyable since my boss, Monique was so enthusiastic that you couldn’t help but also get excited to attend.
I’ve done events for some time now (with other companies as well as my own event planning business) and it was fun to go to the Suites (I’ve been to Houston Oilers, Phoenix Suns, Nascar, a few minor league events and now Seattle Mariners). Each Suite has their own little ‘style’ but most are similar in format – you have set servers (in this case they rotate) but I loved hearing (Tuesday and Wednesday night), “welcome back” from some of the staff. I enjoy working with catering, sales, event coordinators, etc. and building a rapport with them. To be honest, events for me are like being the cheerleaders for groups – helping people to have a GOOD time, have fun, be a part of a group, laughter, dancing, singing, all of it!
Also, the best part was hearing Monique give me compliments and the feeling of a job well done (even if I’m just coordinating the Mariners staff), it felt like an accomplishment. I also love when I see my coworkers/colleagues enjoying themselves and also love when they say thank you! I’m always happy when THEY are happy. My boyfriend also makes me feel good about what I do when he says he loves watching me ‘work’ and how I always am concerned about everyone having a good time. And I love when he and I are at our own SILLY BEST – just like he likes seeing me smile, I love when he acts like a little kid and is enjoying himself too. I also do most of the photos for our company events so I try to get them engaged…(and as you can see, encourage the silliness when I can). lol
Not to say there aren’t those naysayers, the ones who will always find something wrong – the food options are wrong, (allergies, gluten free, vegetarians, etc.), you didn’t get the good beer, ‘where’s the coffee’, ‘why can’t we have this?’, yadda-yadda-yadda – whine, bitch, moan… (just like some family, these individuals I just want to kick in the butt and remind them – its not ALL about YOU! Lighten up, have some fun, pull the stick out of your butt!! 🙂
So, I guess I am learning to ‘like’ baseball; just like I learned to like football, Nascar, basketball, and others. It’s the group fun, getting people UP, being like a kid again and just enjoying the time.
Are you a FUN person or a stick in the mud?? If you can’t laugh at yourself – then LEARN to. Don’t take every moment too seriously – this is your one life, make the most of it!
